Letter from the Editor-in-Chief

Dear Reader, Welcome to a new year. Classes have begun, there are new freshmen wandering the campus, and once again The Rambler has things for you to read as a distraction from things that are of far greater importance.  In my last letter, I announced that The Rambler was entering a new chapter and becoming fully virtual. Not only is this to be the first full year of Rambler’s strictly online presence, but this is also the paper’s twentieth year anniversary!  Somehow we have survived this long. On April 15, 2003, Stephen Kunath and his staff published the first issue of The Rambler . In light of their accomplishment, we will be releasing some special surprises for the Rambler down the line that you are sure to enjoy . This year is another opportunity to continue The Rambler ’s mission, to provide a forum for Catholic journalists and intellectuals. Orange Chocolate Cookies

Recently a friend told me that she was craving oranges and chocolate. Another friend responded that she had a bag of oranges that needed to be used. So, to feed two birds with one cookie, I came up with a simple and delicious recipe for Orange Chocolate Cookies! This seemingly uncommon mix is an easy to bake delicious treat that is sure to liven up your day and make you crave more! Even better, the ingredients are common and cheap! Orange Chocolate Cookies Ingredients: 1 stick of butter/margarine 2 cups of white granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 teaspoon of baking powder 1/4 teaspoon of salt 2 1/2 cups flour 2 medium or 1 large orange 4 ounces chocolate chips or baking chocolate (roughly chopped) Instructions: Preheat the oven to 325℉. Cream the butter/margarine and sugar adding 1/4 cup at a time. Stir in the eggs and vanilla extract. Add the baking powder and salt. Fold in two cups of the flour 1/2 cup at a time. Peach Cobbler

As summer draws to a close, so do the summertime desserts. Peach Cobbler is one of my favorite summer desserts and this is a really simple recipe for it. If you have never made peach cobbler, then I recommend starting with this recipe. If you can, eat it with vanilla ice cream and it makes a wonderful summer treat. This also works really well as a potluck dessert if you need one.  Peach Cobbler Ingredients: 5 peaches, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 4 cups) or 1 bag of frozen peaches 1 stick (8 tablespoons) of butter or margarine 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour 1 3/4 cups of granulated sugar 2 teaspoons of baking powder 1/2 teaspoons of salt 3/4 cups of water ground cinnamon Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350℉. Slice butter/margarine into thin pieces and lay out on a 9x13 baking pan. Place the pan in the oven while it preheats. Peanut Butter Cookies

As Lent begins next week, this will be my last dessert recipe for a while. My plan for Lent is to only publish recipes which are completely meatless, mainly different meal options but possibly a few bread recipes. But until Lent begins, I hope that you enjoy these cookies. Chocolate chip cookies are probably the most famous, but peanut butter cookies are one of my favorites. Using oats adds a nice flavor to the cookies without overwhelming them. Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup honey 1 cup peanut butter 1 egg 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup oats Instructions: Cream the butter and sugar. Stir in the honey and peanut butter. Mix in the egg. Add the salt and baking powder. Fold in the flour and oats. Chill the cookie dough for at least two hours. Government versus Human Rights

There is one thing that every societal government must recognize in order for it to be able and qualified to accomplish its purpose: human dignity. Everything the government issues forth relies on the truth of human dignity and without this understanding, the government fails to enforce justice and maintain peace. To recognize human dignity is to understand that society is not a machine with every person being merely a cog in the system, but instead, society is a community where individual persons should be recognized as such, and thus, deserve to have their human rights protected by the regime.  However, if human rights are defined by the theological understanding of human dignity, does any governmental regime have the power to protect them?  First, we need to understand what is meant by human right. Human rights apply to every human being from the moment of conception by virtue of his humanity and have existed since before being recognized by any type of civil institution. ...

Vanilla Crepes

Crepes are a good basic recipe for breakfast or desert. You can fill it with all sorts of things, healthy or otherwise. I only put the recipe for the crepes themselves below, but you can put whatever you want in them. Vanilla Crepes Ingredients : 1 1/2 cups milk 3 eggs 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 5 tablespoons melted butter Dairy-Free Vanilla Crepes Ingredients : 1 1/2 cups water 3 eggs 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 1 ½ cups all purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 7 tablespoons melted margarine or 6 tablespoons vegetable oil Instructions : In a large bowl mix together the milk/water, eggs, and vanilla. They should be mixed until the eggs are just this side of frothy. Stir in the melted butter/margarine/vegetable oil. Fold in the flour, sugar, and salt. Heat a skillet over medium heat.
